...so maybe that helps to explain my absence today. I don't know what to say about yesterday...but you get the drift.
This is the first time this has happened, but he literally could NOT be comforted or soothed or stop making all the little baby noises that he's so fond of making.
We tried Mylicon, because Jenna was a baby with LOTS of gas issues and this made sense to me. No go.
We tried walking. Yeah, it went ok...for five minutes at a time. And then the screaming/crying started again.
We tried rocking. He no likey so much.
We tried everything under the sun known to cure fussy babies. The only thing that worked? Bringing him to lay beside me in bed. Not beside Brent...but me. Because apparently I smell better. Or something. Who knows.
The good news? He totally skipped his 3am feeding and slept until 5am. The bad news? He was awake from his 10pm feeding until after 1am...I'm not sure that one offsets the other at this point.
So there's been a lot of naps today. You know the whole "sleep when they sleep" theory? Yeah, I really put it to the test today. Of course, now it's late in the day and I need to stay awake so that I'll sleep tonight.
At least that's my theory. Brent's theory is to sleep all he can now so that someone will be awake to care for the little stinker tonight...we'll keep you posted on what happens! (Not that you don't have better things to do, but still.)

Survey Says!
Well, first off - the survey says that he's a keeper! But that's not what I meant to tell you about...
Survey says - it's an innie!
If you ask me, that is. Brent thinks that it's an outie because there is a raised ridge around the actual belly button, but I think that will go down as he gets older.
He lost his little cord stub last night at some point between diaper changes, and my Mom's just been SO curious to find out if he's got an innie or an outie. I would think that it would be an innie since both Brent and I are innies (except when I'm pregnant!), but you never know. But it's official now - he's got an innie.
I was sort of freaked out when I discovered it. Like I said, it was between diaper changes (oh, the hundreds of diapers that you go through these first few weeks!) and Brent had changed him last. I would have thought that if it was missing, he would have mentioned it, and he didn't say anything so I thought that I was discovering it for the first time.
The cord stub had BARELY been hanging on for the past two days, and despite the hospital telling us not to do anything to care for it, I started putting alcohol on it yesterday afternoon. You know, just a little bit rubbed around the base of the stub to help it "dry out." Don't freak out, this is what I was supposed to do with each diaper change eight years ago when I had my daughter, so I knew that it was ok. It's just that apparently the thing to do now according to my medical professionals was just to leave it alone and let it fall when it falls.
That's all well and good, but he's a week and a half old now and this boy needs a bath! And more than the "spit bath" that we've given him a couple of times. You know what I'm saying?
So I had treated it just one time with alcohol when I changed his diaper and then Brent had the next diaper and didn't say anything. By the time it was my turn next, it was gone!
And by gone - I mean, literally gone. Not fallen into his diaper. Not fallen into his clothes. Not down in the blanket that he'd been swaddled up in. Nowhere to be found. And THAT was NOT going to work for me - I asked Brent to please search the floors for it until it was found. I did not want one of us to be stepping on something crunchy, you know?
Luckily for him, he found it right away and it was disposed of properly. I'm really big on saving things, I'll readily admit to that. But the cord stub that was all crunchy and nasty? No thanks. I'll save something else later!

Daddy's First Poopy Diaper!
As any Mom knows, it doesn't take long for your newborn to make you his/her first "present." And lucky for me, I was still in Recovery when it happened, so Dad got the pleasure of handling this task!
The nurses moved us from the L&D rooms into a regular maternity (after birth) room and gave Brent all sorts of instructions on what was allowed and not as far as handling the baby and where we could and could not take him in the maternity wing of the hospital. At this point, Jax decided to make his first "present."
Lucky for Brent, our fabulous nurse, Megan, was on hand for some instructions...
SUCCESS!!!
Megan also gave Brent a lesson in the art of swaddling a newborn...
And this turned out to be a natural skill for Brent - he's now known around our house as the "Baby Burrito King!"Everyone got a little more cuddling time with Jax, and then Brent left the room to go back and check on me again. But according to hospital policy, either Mom or Dad has to be with the baby at all times, or else the baby goes to the nurses. So do you think that stopped my Mom? Nope. She just trotted on down to the nurses desk to get her cuddle time in!
Once Brent came back, he was able to take Jax back to the room, and look who had shown up - Big Brother! Check out the smile on his face when he gets to hold Jax for the first time...
Now, they wheel me into the room...finally...and you can see my hand in this picture - the FIRST picture taken of me while in the hospital!
I'm really not sure why we didn't take any pictures while we were in the L&D room...I guess there was other stuff on our minds! It was after this flash went off that the "No Pictures!" mandate went into effect...can you blame me? I look like death warmed over!
I'm not vain or anything, but good grief...I look B.A.D.!
A little bit later that afternoon, Jenna showed up. When I first asked her if she wanted to hold Jax, she said no. She was scared that she would drop him. But she was looking at him with such wonder in her eyes, that I cautiously scooted over in my bed to make some room for her and she climbed in to sit beside me. I told her that we could hold him together so that he stayed safe. After she figured out that she could sit and hold him, she didn't want to put him down!
And there's Grandma (Brent's step-mom) giving a heling hand as well!
I think that Jenna's visit pretty much wrapped up that first full day in the hospital for us. After the kids left, most everyone else did too. I was tired, and sick to my stomach, and just having an overall rough time of it, and everyone was understanding enough to give us a little time and space.
I won't lie...the time up until this point that I had been in the hospital had been rough but my son was here, in my arms, safe and sound and I was recovering nicely as well. I mean, what girl wouldn't be happy to be upgraded from a diet of only ice chips for the past 28 hours to clear liquids?!?! That dinner of chicken broth, Jell-O and apple juice was the best thing that I'd tasted in my whole life!
